Fire Dept to put up green building in Curchorem

The mining hubs of Curchorem-Savordem will get a green touch by Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).
The first ever green building by the department will come up at Curchorem, which will set an example for others to emulate.
Director of Fire Services Ashok Menon told Herald that the building, which will be constructed by Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC), will be self sustainable.
The target set by GSIDC for the completion of the project is of 18 months with the work beginning this December.
The department which is largely dependent on fresh water to fill its tenders will be harvesting rain water at Curchorem premises.
“In times of fire emergency, the department requires large quantity of water. With water harvesting, the department will be able to accumulate enough quantity of natural water, which will be later filled in tanks,” Menon stated.
DFES is also toying with the idea of using solar power for its various functions in this building, which will house offices, conference room, library, training rooms and other amenities.
As an add-on, the department also intends to make exhibition space in the building so that the students and people in general can be educated about the department.
“It will be like a museum, where students can visit and know about the department and its activities, which is available for emergency services round the clock,” director said.
The new building with modern amenities will be a welcome change for the department, which has its fire station in a shed next to Curchorem police station.
At present there are 12 fire stations in the State except for Sanguem taluka and 1 Headquarter with an approved technical strength of 487 personnel.
As per the State government’s decision to get various departments under e-services, the fire department has also activated its website which gives information at the click of a button.
Menon said with the commissioning of the e-service, the people need not have to visit the department with their queries. “They can mail us for any sort of fire permission or report,” he said.
