BENAULIM: St. Anthony SC, Assolda rallied from behind to down Maina SC Curtorim 5-3 via the tie-breaker to lift the 11th Cana Benaulim Panchayat Cup Soccer Trophy organised by United Club Benaulim, at St John Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, recently.
The match started on a fast pace and it took Maina just 12 minutes to go ahead after striker Milagres Fernandes’ left footer got a slight deflection off Assolda defender Cruz Gomes and went past rival goalkeeper Johnson Fernandes into the nylons.
Assolda gradually came back into the match with Moises De Sa and Vitorino Fernandes harassing the Maina defense. Assolda equalised in the 27th minute when winger Phezer Gomes latched on to a pass by Vitorino and slot past Curtorim goalkeeper Cristo Hilarion.
The second half was a midfield battle and as both the teams were unable to get more goals as a result the tie-breaker was applied in which Assolda were successful through Joaquim Carvalho, Myron Fernandes, Moises De Sa, Irfan Yadwad while Floyd Barreto and Vickey Cardozo netted for Maina.
St Anthony SC, Assolda were awarded Rs 40,000 and a trophy while Maina SC, Curtorim had to be content with Rs, 30,000 and a trophy.
Churchill Alemao MLA Benaulim Constituency and GFA President gave away the prizes in the presence of Diella Fernandes, Sarpanch of Benaulim, Anthony Leo Fernandes Sarpanch Colva Menino De Bandar, Xavier Pereira, John Albuquerque, Felicia Noronha, Azlinda Fernandes, Jaju Fernandes and other dignitaries.
