His joy knew no bounds when Churchill Brothers were finally crowned the I-League champions earlier this week. Churchillbab was the cynosure of all eyes at the Tilak stadium after he descended on the playing arena when the referee blew the final whistle. His supporters might have expected wild celebrations following the victory, but the big bash will come only on May 16, coinciding with Churchillbab’s birthday. In fact, a meeting of his workers and supporters was held at Blasco Executive to finalise plans for the birthday bash on May 16. It was sports and football that earned name and fame for the Varca-based Alemao’s. And, sports had helped them too to play long innings in politics. The Varca strongman had been literally lying in the dumps since the rout of the Alemaos in the 2012 polls. And, his close supporters believe that the I-league crown presents a big time opportunity for the Varca strongman to bid a comeback and resurrect himself politically. Sources say his phones have not stopped ringing since Tuesday and he is expected to give indications of his political future on his birthday. At the same time, however, younger brother Joaquimbab’s resignation from the club has raised many an eyebrow amongst the Alemao’s cronies. Joaquimbab said he has quit the post simply because he was presiding over the affairs for nearly two decades now. But, he was conspicuous by his absence at the victory celebrations at the Tilak maidan. And, wait and watch whether he would make his presence at the big bash at Blasco Executive, Navelim on May 16.
