POINGUINIM, MAY 19
A politician from Poinguinim has been reportedly booked by Karwar police on charges of transporting contraband liquor from Goa on his motorcycle.
It is learnt from sources at the Karwar police station that the vehicle was intercepted by them carrying the contraband liquor on March 10 at Kodibag Karwar, but the rider of the vehicle ran away leaving the bike by the roadside.
Thereafter, the Excise Enforcement and Lottery Prohibition Wing of Karwar police took possession of the vehicle and traced the owner of the vehicle from the RTA office at Margao. The owner of the vehicle has been identified as Ulhas P Naik of H. No 1061, Ward No 2, Poinguinim.
Naik has been booked under Section 327 of the Motor Vehicle Act and a notice has been served to him on May 17 to appear at the Special Police Station at Karwar within two days failing which he would be arrested.
Naik is the ex-sarpanch of Poinguinim Panchayat and after an unsuccessful bid to contest the Assembly election on the Congress ticket, had joined the NCP ticket in 2004 in the Poinguinim Constituency.
When contacted, Naik told Herald that he is fully aware of the situation. “I am ready to face arrest from the Karwar police and I will defend myself,” said Naik.
