Mandovi bridge choked as car catches fire

PANJIM: Commuters and motorists using the Mandovi Bridge were caught in a massive traffic jam after a four-wheeler caught fire, Tuesday evening. At about 6.43pm, seeing a Maruti Omni GA-03-P-2445 going up in flames, some drivers immediately called the fire control room to send fire tenders to douse the fire.

“The vehicle was already in flames when we reached the spot. It took us about 20 minutes to douse the fire. But the vehicle has been badly damaged,” sub officer, Panjim fire station Francis Aquino told Herald.
Three occupants of the car including the driver escaped as they quickly got out of the car, midway on the bridge, sensing trouble.
A long queue of vehicles was seen for over an hour. Some legislators and journalists who were returning to Panjim after the Assembly session closed for the day, were also stuck in the traffic jam.
Panjim police are inquiring into the incident. Traffic police besides Panjim police tried to ease the traffic chaos.
