The sandy shores of Anjuna have been painted in Bollywood
colours as DJ Akbar Sami, Lloyd and Aqeel are bringing the house down with
their music at Club Nyex. After enthralling their fans at the nightclub on
August 14, the veteran DJs will be repeating the exercise tonight, on
Independence Day. DJ Lloyd who is going to be sharing the console with DJ Aqeel
and Akbar Sami at Club Nyex tonight, currently spends time shuttling between
Mumbai and Goa. Speaking about his music, Lloyd says, “My music is very sexy,
funky, groovy and naughty. I play a lot of mainstream music that connects with
everyone. It is a mix of Bollywood dance music, EDM and commercial music.
Basically it has just the right amount of zing to keep the party atmosphere
alive and kicking. I play the tracks which people are fond of and even those
that they have forgotten. I have own mixes which I have programmed. But
regardless of the track that I’m playing, it has an added surprise which gives
it a new feel and groove. There is always an unexpected surprise that comes
when playing a popular track.”
DJ Aqeel, who admits being smitten by the beautiful state of
Goa, is an almost local face. The ace DJ who has a house here, comes here every
two weeks for a couple of days to rejuvenate with family and friends, some of
who live here. Aqeel says, “The last time I played in Goa, was about a month
ago for a party at a star property and about 3 months ago at Club Nyex.”
Speaking about his style of music, Aqeel, says, “My style of music is very
versatile. I play Bollywood EDM Retro and also Deep House. I also make my own
mixes in Bollywood. It’s a lot of work but once the sound drops on those big
speakers, the reaction of the audience is priceless.” The evetran DJ is
currently working on Bollywood films music and will soon make his debut as a
music director.

Known as the pioneer of the ‘remix culture’ that took the
entire country by surprise, DJ Akbar Sami has just completed working on an
album called ‘Roar by Akbar Sami’. Sami is also working on an instrumental
version of the national anthem currently and those present at Club Nyex tonight
are going to be treated to a surprise teaser of this very track.
The late 90s saw a lot of songs being remixed by various DJs
and Akbar Sami was one of crucial players of this cult phenomenon. After
releasing his first album, Jalwa’, that made the Indian music industry heads
sit up and take note of a new ‘thing’ called remix, Sami followed it up with
two more albums in the form of Jadoo and Jalwa 2. Sami says, “These albums
marked the beginning of the remix culture in India; everything else followed
later. Prior to releasing these albums, I used to have my events titled, ‘Remix
Nights’ where I used to invite industry heads and make them listen to remixes
of popular songs. They used to like it but no one had foreseen it to become a
culture in India. Having travelled the world over, I have a fair idea of what
works and what doesn’t.” While Sami maintains that remixing is an art, some
players in the industry followed unfair practices which attracted a bad name to
the phenomenon. Sami says, “After ‘Jalwa’ became a hit, music companies
realised the potential and the market for remix songs. Music companies were
looking at options and in the process, roped in a few inexperienced DJs who had
no clue about ‘what goes into remixing and what songs are selected’, for the
task. These Naturally, these DJs couldn’t get the right sound. In order to
compensate for the quality of the music, the companies then started making
raunchy videos to balance it out. That’s what gave remixes a bad name.”
Speaking about his performance tonight, Sami says, “People
have heard me over the years and they will get the signature Akbar Sami music
tonight. I will play a lot of unreleased mixes made especially by me for me and
my fans. I will be playing a beautiful mix of Commercial Dance Music, House and
Bollywood.”
