PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) on Wednesday began a crackdown on illegal handcarts across the city.
The decision to act and remove illegal handcarts comes after Urban Development Minister Francis D’Souza’s directions to the Mayor and Commissioner.
“We have started the crackdown of illegal handcarts. This will continue but today we focused on Miramar and Church Square and we have seized five handcarts and taken them into CCP custody,” CCP Commissioner Ajit Roy said.
He added, “As the five handcarts did not have proper documents they were seized, they will not be released until the owner possesses valid documents, otherwise action will be taken.”
CCP also started fixing name plates on handcarts which has the trade licenser number, timing and name of the licence holder along with photograph. 13 plates were fixed on Wednesday evening; the exercise is set to continue. “With this the citizens will be able to identify the carts,” Roy added.
