The morcha members, in a meeting on Friday, stated that the government is aware of wide opposition to marina projects despite which they are being encouraged in the State.
“Gadkari’s statement is completely irresponsible considering that there is wide opposition to marina projects in Zuari River ever since they were conceived through two lease deeds of October 12, 2010 with Kargwal Constructions Pvt Ltd and October 14, 2014 with Yacht Heaven Pvt Ltd,” BMM (Goa Unit) President Maggie Silveira said.
The group has alleged that government’s efforts to bring marinas are an attempt to deprive local communities of fishing space in the river. “What is most insulting is that in the face of overwhelming opposition from the public of Chicalim, Nauxim, Cacra, Odxel and Goa Velha, and also minister Alina Saldanha, MLA Vishnu Surya Wagh, pachayats and local groups; the union minister insisted on marinas in River Zuari,” she said.
On another issue, BMM has demanded revocation of the May 24, 2000 notification issued by the central government that extended MPT’s jurisdiction over Zuari River.
They claimed that a number of problems exist in Vasco where MPT has its jurisdiction that also includes protests from fisher folk on the use of Vasco bay for MPT projects and expansion plans.“MPT has already caused social danger by announcing plans of developing Goa into rest and recreation destination,” the group said.
