MARGAO: Curtorim Gymkhana defeated Calangute Association 2-1 to cruise into the quarter-finals of All-Goa Seafarers Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Navelim Sporting Club at Rosary Ground, Navelim on Wednesday.
Curtorim held the upper hand in the opening sessions with their forwards troubling the rival defence with well orchestrated raids. Their persistent forays paid off in the 13th minute when striker Sertorio Monteiro slotted past the rival goalkeeper with snap shot.
Stung by the setback, Calangute intensified their attacks and created a couple of forays but rival defenders were alert in frustrating their attacks.
Curtorim had a couple of opportunities but their forwards missed from close range.
Post resumption, Curtorim continued to enjoy the lion’s share of exchanges and doubled the lead soon after resumption when striker Valzunio Fernandes punished the rival goalkeeper with a clinical finish. Stunned by the double blow, Calangute went into attacking mode and late in the second half Alex Fernandes scored a consolation goal.
