The stretch between IIIrd railway gate and Peeranwadi that had become the commuters’ nightmare by way of major and minor accidents will be widened to 120 ft from the present 60 ft.
NHAI authorities have commenced the marking of the 3-km stretch, giving indication of the widening work that would be taken up at the earliest.
It may be recalled that various organisations under the banner of Belgaum Chamber of Commerce and Industries had resorted to road blockade agitation, blocking the Goa road for over an hour demanding the widening. The demand was made due to rising number of accidents apart from causing a traffic bottleneck. Commuters were facing problems apart from losing valuable time to clear the stretch.
The road had become a commuter’s nightmare especially during office hours, posing risk to motorists apart from losing time. NHAI also plans to construct a divider making the road more convenient for motorists.
While the State government is expected to bear 50 per cent of the proposed cost of Rs 20 crore, NHAI will spend the remaining amount.
