The contractors engaged by Water Resources Department (WRD) began the works on re-construction of the protection wall much to the relief of the inmates of Jesuit Community at the Baga House.
The inmates of the House had been living in fear of being washed away due to illegal hill cutting in their property and damages to the retaining and protection walls. The Jesuit Community was hoping that the protection walls in their property and along the shores would be re-strengthened before the monsoon.
Though the works on the retaining walls along the shores commenced a few days ago there was no sign of workers for the last couple of days raising questions. The people were kept wondering what had gone wrong despite the assurance by the WRD to complete the retaining wall works before the coming monsoon.
Works on strengthening of the protecting wall along the shores of Baga-Arpora were abandoned following the illegal hill cutting in the property belonging to the Jesuit Community.
The Contractors engaged by the WRD removed their men and machine exposing the protecting wall to immediate dangers of soil erosion forcing the Jesuit Community to approach the court for justice.
The people of Calangute, Candolim, Arpora-Nagoa, Parra and others backed the Jesuit Community in their fight for justice.
When contacted Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said, “I am satisfied that the WRD finally took up the protection retaining wall works. I hope the ongoing works are completed before the onset of the monsoon to protect the Xavier Retreat House at Baga.”
Despite efforts to contact the Director of Xavier Retreat House, Fr Ronnie D’Souza was not available for his comments.
