PANJIM: A fire broke out in the Bank of Maharashtra-Zonal Office in Panjim early Monday morning. Intervention by fire officials averted a possible major mishap, no casualty was reported.
Fire and Emergency Services (FES) Officers said a fire brigade was rushed to the spot on receiving a call and the manager was called to the office premises.
“When we reached the spot, the office premises were filled with smoke and we suspect that the AC in the server room might have tripped. No major loss was reported. Hardly a few computer cables and some files were burnt. We finished the operation in an hour; the flames were doused fast only the smoke took us time to clear. We used positive pressure ventilator to blow out smoke,” the FES officer said
He added, “We have written to Electricity Department and Police to investigate the cause of the fire or if it was a case of arson.”
Sources suspect the fire incident to be connected to a scam, speculating that this might be a case of arson. In a crackdown across different cities, Pune police had recently arrested six persons, including the CEO and MD of Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) and the bank’s former CMD in connection with a Rs 2000-crore fraud case.
The bank zonal manager, however, suspects short circuit to be the cause behind the fire and said no major files or computers were burnt to ashes and said they had data backup.
