PANJIM: Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni on Thursday came out in support of the floating casino vessels citing the need to strengthen the economic conditions of the State.
“State needs some economic activities. Economic activity and ecology need to be balanced and the same is being done,” Nadkarni said responding to a question from a Goa University student, who pointed out the ecological imbalanced caused due to various floating vessels and jetties in River Mandovi thereby disturbing the flow of river water.
“Merely having jetties and vessels does not affect ecology. We need to balance both ecology and economy,” the AG said. “We need jetties for fishing business,” he added.
The BJP-led government has fixed March 31 as deadline for the offshore casino vessels to shift out of River Mandovi. While the Captain of Ports has identified four alternative sites, including Aguada Bay, for the vessels, the government has failed to come up with any infrastructure at the sites.
