PANJIM: Raj Bhavan, Caranzalem, Taleigao and Dona Paula were plunged into darkness after a pole carrying a 33 kv high tension electricity cable fell as pre monsoon showers accompanied by thunder and lightning lashed the city and its suburbs tonight.
Light was restored to certain areas only at around 10.45 p.m.
The electricity department officials said that an electric pole at a five-star hotel in Dona Paula fell breaking the cable coming from the Kadamba sub station and plunging the area into darkness.
The department officials said that they had to erect a new pole to provide an alternate supply to affected areas.
Canacona correspondent adds: After thunder and lightning filled Monday night, torrential rains struck Canacona taluka since early Tuesday morning.
A huge tree came crashing down at Padi in the Karmalghat section, bringing highway traffic to a grinding halt for well over an hour.
Fire fighters from the Cuncolin fire station cut the branches and cleared the highway at about 9.30 am.
Trees were uprooted at many places, especially at the Nilgiri plantations in Karmalghat section.
According to local observatory sources, about 22.4 mm of rainfall was recorded on Monday night.
