VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has ordered its inspectors to identify gambling dens in Vasco and submit a report within seven days.
The order has been issued by Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes after several women complained to their respective councillors that gambling activities adversely affected their families.
Fernandes said that strict action would be taken by the municipality against illegal gambling hubs in Vasco town.
“It has been brought to my notice that many illegal gaddas have come up within the jurisdiction of this Council without permission. As a result of which, illegal gambling dens have mushroomed in the municipal jurisdiction. An inquiry has been directed to be conducted by the municipal inspectors and a report has been sought with location of the dens within a period of 7-days,” Fernandes said.
Sources claim that gambling clubs, mini casinos, roulette set ups are operating in shops and establishments registered as general stores and gaddas in Vasco.
Incidentally, locals have been flocking to these numerous gambling outlets and blowing up their income. The women, whose husbands frequent these gambling dens, reportedly met their respective councillors requesting them to free their husbands from clutches of gambling dens.
The councilors, in turn, complained to the chief officer who issued the order to his inspectors to identify the gambling dens in Vasco and submit a report within seven days.
