TIVIM: The Assagao gram sabha on Sunday resolved to urge the home minister to hand over the Assagao murder case to the Crime Branch or Special Investigation Team (SIT).
It may be recalled that the accused Ranjit Tuyekar, who allegedly murdered a 19-year-old girl in Assagao last year, has not been arrested for more than a year now.
After the secretary read and confirmed the minutes of the last meeting, the villagers took up the issue of the murder saying that the accused is not yet arrested by the Goa Police despite being more than a year.
There was heated argument between Clayton Fonseca and Panch Victor D’Souza over panchayat’s inability to pursue the case with the police.
Fonseca demanded that the entire panchayat should resign as it has failed to uphold the name of the village and did nothing to protect the glory of the village as the accused was still dodging the police.
Panch D’Souza said he has no right to seek resignation of the entire body.
Later, it was resolved that a representation be made to the home minister urging him to hand over the murder case to the Crime Branch or SIT.
Taking up other issues concerning the village, Edwin Fonseca sought to know when hot-mixing of the main road will be taken up, as the local MLA and WRD minister already inaugurated it nearly a month back. Panch Hanumant Naik said it will commence soon.
“Soon, the code will be implemented. I request the panchayat to pursue the matter with the local MLA and obtain the work order before the code is implemented,” said Fonseca.
Lourdes Sudhir sought to know from the panchayat why the garbage committee was still not functional when garbage issue was severe in Assagao.
