PORVORIM: Mapusa police arrested a 25-year-old bus conductor on charges of raping a 17-year-old girl from Tivim, after promising to marry her.
Police said, the victim’s sister complained that the accused, Mahendra Kauthankar, had entered into a relationship with her sister over a period of about two years and had promised to marry the victim.
The complainant further stated that her sister had gone for a drama at a temple in Tivim on Thursday night, when the accused took the girl to a nearby hillock and allegedly raped her.
Police further informed that the victim narrated the incident to her sister, who contacted the Police Control Room at about 11.30 pm. On receiving information from the Police Control Room, Mapusa police rushed to Tivim and after conducting investigations, arrested the accused early Friday morning.
Police have registered the offence under Sections 376 of IPC and 8 of Children’s Act.
