PANJIM: The State government on Saturday imposed Section 144 of CrPC in the city, forcing over hundreds of agitated workers, protesting in front of the Captain of Ports office, for last six days, to move to Azad Maidan.
The contract workers employed under Goa Recruitment and Employment Society (GRES), who are holding a dharna demanding regularization of service, raised strong objection to imposition of Section 144, and blocked the main road and refused to move to Azad Maidan.
However the police used force to move the workers, who were on hunger strike since Monday, on the road divider. Nearly 10 workers have been hospitalized after their condition worsened.
The striking workers have now decided to further intensify their protest if their demands are not met by Sunday morning. The leaders and workers will decide their future course on Sunday evening.
Being employed through the recruitment society, in various departments, the government has already made it clear that it cannot intervene in the matter, while GRES has appealed to them to join duty within 24 hours.
