Faced with the directions of the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to stop sludge and waste water flowing in the open fields and storm water drains, the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) has decided to tap funds from the National Fisheries Board to redevelop its messy wholesale fish market.
SGPDA member secretary Vinod Kumar told Herald that the PDA will soon float a tender for the appointment of a consultant to redevelop the wholesale fish market with the help of financial resources from the Fisheries Board. The redevelopment plan includes developing the vacant 5000 sq mts of land in the wholesale fish market for parking, construction of an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and a building in the market. “As per the notification, the PDA can prepare a report to tap Rs 2.5 crore for the market re-development project. However, we will ask the consultant to explore the possibility of availing funds up to Rs 4.5 crore for the project”, Vinod Kumar said.
Replying to a question, the SGPDA member secretary said that his office has already issued directions to the contractors manning the wholesale fish market and the retail fish market to take care of the waste generated in the two markets. He, however, hastened to add that all the stink at the wholesale fish market is not the creation of the market complex, saying that storm water drains carrying waste water also pass through the market, creating a stinking environment at the wholesale fish market.
