PONDA: Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) was awarded the ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ for the best management of non-biodegradable dry and plastic waste in support to government initiative to control the garbage menace.
Environment Minister Alina Saldanha handed over the ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ to the PMC during the Environment Day celebrations at Panjim.
Later addressing media persons in Ponda, PMC Chairperson Radhika Naik acknowledged the efforts of Councillor Venkatesh Naik, who had accepted the challenge of garbage management in the PMC area.
“After taking charge last year, the PMC immediately succeeded in solving the wet and dry garbage problem by introducing the organic waste management machine at market complex,” said Naik.
“Now, PMC is likely to introduce solid waste management plant based on plasma technology, where solid waste will turn into powder after treatment in the plasma plant and no one is likely to oppose it because of harmless technology,” added Naik.
“This project will be installed at Keriya-Khandepar in the land acquired by PMC especially for garbage treatment. The project work for plasma plant is likely to commence in October and the plant will be operational from April next year,” said Naik.
Deputy Chairperson Shantaram Colvekar, Councillor Sunil Desai, Councillor and PMC Solid Waste Management head Venkatesh Naik were also present at the media meet.
