MARGAO: As Goa gears up for the festive season, a persistent beef shortage is causing financial strain on vendors and frustration among consumers, raising calls for urgent government intervention.

Beef vendors in Margao and nearby areas report severe supply constraints, forcing some to close their businesses. Prices have surged, with boneless beef now retailing between Rs 400 and Rs 500 per kilogram, up from Rs 380. Loam has jumped from Rs 450 to Rs 500 per kilogram, while undercut prices have risen from Rs 550 to Rs 600.
Vendor Abdul Razak expressed disappointment at the government’s inaction, warning that the current stock is insufficient to meet the high demand anticipated for Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Local resident Milagres Fernandes from Fatorda noted that the shortage has led many restaurants to drop beef dishes from their menus. He added that the rising costs have deterred customers, affecting both home cooking and dining out. “The festive season is a time for family traditions and special meals, but the lack of affordable beef is dampening the holiday spirit,” Fernandes said, urging the government to take immediate steps to stabilise the supply.
Fernandes urged the government to act swiftly to secure a steady beef supply, highlighting the importance of beef to Goa’s festive traditions. Without intervention, the shortage could disrupt holiday celebrations and disappoint tourists as well, this season.
