PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) and the engineer concerned on Thursday claimed that the issue of raw sewage ‘leaking’ into the drains at Mala, here, has been ‘addressed’ by the Public Works Department (PWD).
“There was a leakage from a sewer pipeline of the PWD, the department has addressed it, and connected the particular sewer line to two million litres per day (MLD) capacity sewage treatment plant (STP) located at Patto,” CCP Mayor Rohit Monserrate said interacting with mediapersons at Porvorim, after attending a meeting with PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral and the officials concerned on sewage and other issues concerning Panjim city.

He informed that the PWD Minister has given directions to officials concerned to ensure that the vacuum sewer system is commissioned and houses are connected to the vacuum sewer lines at the earliest.
It may be recalled that a building that houses commercial establishments at Neugi Nagar allegedly discharged raw sewage and also there was a leakage from a PWD’s sewer line which led to raw sewage flowing into the public drains and through public drains it reached at the doorsteps of the residents at Mala.
PWD Assistant Engineer Rashmi Shirodkar claimed that she got an alternate line laid and connected it to two MLD capacity STP located at Patto on Sunday, April 30, while the line from which the sewage was leaking has been disconnected.
“Now, there is no leakage from our sewer lines, the department completed the work on Sunday. If there is still sewage flowing into the drains at Mala then it is for the authorities concerned to find the location and the source. We have done our job,” Shirodkar said.
Meanwhile, CCP Mayor Rohit Monserrate informed that during the meeting sewage issue at St Inez was also discussed in length.
“The contractor had damaged sewage chambers at St Inez and they were not able to find the exact location of leakage…They have now found it, and assurance has been given to us that in the next few days they will get it fixed,” he said.
