PANJIM: Though delayed, the mobile forensic laboratory may soon become a reality as the procurement of materials for the labs is on.
The concept of mobile forensic units was mooted as a separate wing of Forensic Science Laboratory over a year ago. “The procurement of both (forensic labs) vehicles is at advanced stage,” Deputy IGP O P Mishra told Herald declining to divulge the details.
Home department sources said the vehicles will be fully equipped with special forensic equipment for use at all crime scenes. One van will be stationed at north and south district headquarters each. The recruitment of forensic personnel will take place shortly.
“There are several cases where police teams either from the headquarters or respective police stations don’t reach the crime scene on time. The mobile vans were proposed so that experts can collect the evidence from a crime scene without any delay, and take the samples to the laboratory for proper investigation and analysis,” a source said.
Meanwhile, the state-of-art forensic laboratory at Verna is functioning partially, as the process of setting up all its associated wings including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Toxicology and other labs under the same roof, is on.
The lab, for now, preserves the viscera samples ‘intact and safe’ before sending to the forensic outside laboratories. Once it begins to function fully, all the exhibits will be examined in the state laboratory which will help faster disposal of cases.
The finger prints bureau, which is also one of the units, was the first one to start functioning, much before the forensic laboratory took shape.
