BELGAUM: A truck driver was injured, while the driver and cleaner of a Goa-bound vegetable tempo had a lucky escape in a road accident along NH4A near Utsav Hotel at Udyambag in Belgaum.
The traffic on the Belgaum-Panjim NH4A came to a standstill for several hours, causing a major traffic jam on the busy national highway putting a large number of Goan commuters to inconvenience.
According to police, the tempo belonging to J M Patil, a wholesale vegetable supplier, carrying vegetables to Goa turned turtle after the empty cement truck collided against it. The truck was heading to Bagalkot after supplying cement at Margao.
Police said the driver Abdul Salam and the cleaner of the tempo had a miraculous escape, while the truck driver Mudkappa sustained minor hand injuries.
Meanwhile as the entire road was blocked, vehicles from either side were stranded till early Friday morning causing heavy traffic congestion. Police had a tough time in removing the vehicles and clearing the road for traffic. After great difficulty, traffic was diverted via Angol road and vice versa. A case is registered in Belgaum South traffic police station.
