PANJIM: Former Panjim BJP MLA Sidharth Sripad Kuncalienker on Thursday said that citizens should elect good candidates in the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) elections slated for March 20.
“We are bound to work for “lotus” which we did during the Zilla Panchayat (ZP) elections. But here is no party since municipal and CCP elections are not fought on party lines,” Kuncalienkar said.

Reacting to the advertisement released by Panjim MLA Babush Monserrate along with selected candidates of his panel with party’s symbol, Kuncalienker said that he was not aware how the advertisement was released.
Normally in elections, party candidates are announced by the party president or the general secretary and names are released on the party’s letterhead. In municipal elections it does not arise as these polls are not fought on party lines, he said.
According to Kuncalienker, the panels supported by political parties are also not given the same symbol. This is an election where individuals contest.
“I am a soldier of the party. If elections are fought on party symbol then will definitely work together for party’s victory even if there is disenchantment. We will work for the party,” he said.
“We want to elect good candidates. We want to give city wards in the hands of good team. Last year Panjim slipped to 349 positions under Swacch Bharat Abhiyan,” he mentioned.
Kuncalienker expressed his displeasure over the pay parking in city. He said a fee of Rs 20 for one-hour parking was unaffordable to the people. He also suggested rationalisation of taxes.
The former MLA remarked that those who were talking of relocating offshore casinos in River Mandovi had now become their protectors. Few years back an attempt was made to raze encroachments by casino operators but again encroachments sprouted there, he said.
