More than 20 years after Elections for two Assembly constituencies and the Mormugao Lok Sabha seat was countermanded following the death of an Independent candidate, the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Margao is likely to pronounce the verdict in the sensational Countermanding of Elections conspiracy case on Tuesday.
JMFC, Margao Vandana Tendulkar is expected to pronounce orders on Tuesday afternoon, which will decide the fate of the accused persons, including two city-based lawyers, Adv Anacleto Viegas and Adv Radharao Gracias, besides Freddy Dias, Dr Ernest Rodrigues, Lino Ferrao, Joe Fernandes, Norbert Almeida.
The police had charged the accused for criminal conspiracy to countermand the elections for the Velim and Curtorim Assembly constituencies and the Mormugao Lok Sabha constituency in the 1989 polls by impersonating the candidate, Caietan Jackson Fernandes.
Elections to these three constituencies were countermanded following the death of Caietano Jackson Fernandes. Police investigations later revealed that Caietano Jackson had never filed his nomination papers for the three constituencies and that he was impersonated as part of the conspiracy to countermand the polls.
