MARGAO: The Shadow Council of Margao on Friday said that the death of a beggar who was found COVID positive needs to be seriously taken as a warning bell to all, and more specifically the authorities.
“Not that we do not sympathise with the truly poor and needy people who take up to begging, but prevalent conditions demand that a cautious approach needs to be taken,” said Savio Coutinho.
“The authorities need to round up all those indulging in begging, especially on public streets and house them in a proper shelter. There are possibilities of there being some sort of ‘professional begging’ also, which angle needs to be checked, and strict action should be taken against such begging activities,” pointed out Savio.
“At the traffic signals at the old market, the beggars literally put their head inside the car and seek alms. This is very risky as one never knows how safe they are with respect to COVID. We demand that appropriate action be taken on this issue,” demanded SCM.
