MARGAO: The Shadow Council for Margao on Thursday stopped the ongoing work of improvement of the nallah from Gujarat Samaj to Supreme Park along the Eastern Bypass as substandard material was being used for the construction and a complaint has been lodged with the Water Resources Department.
Convener of Shadow Council for Margao Savio Coutinho who is a qualified civil engineer himself has been monitoring the work for the last 10 days and said that low grade materials and negligible amount of cement was used for the construction which would result in the work getting washed away in the first rains.
He said that instead of sand the contractor was using black metal powder or dust and the same has not been certified by the department. Besides, he said negligible amount of cement is being used.
“Eight gamelas of black metal along with five gamelas of the dust and only one gamela of cement is used to prepare the cement mix,” said Savio pointing out that this is far from the specifications given by the department.
“While no cube samples are collected from the site, a separate mixture has been used to prepare cube samples in bulk and the same are submitted as taken from different places where the work is going on according to the contractor’s staff at the site,” Savio said.
Lamenting that a qualified supervisor was not seen at the site as required in the contract, Savio said the entire work is left to the mercy of unskilled labourers.
The Shadow Council for Margao has demanded an enquiry into this shoddy work and that the quality of the work executed be examined by the quality control section.
