PANJIM: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Goa unit has accused the State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to suppress the voice of women and senior citizens by stopping them from coming out and demonstrate against the government’s misdeeds.
Addressing a press conference in Panjim, the NCP questioned the Goa police act of ‘manhandling’ and ‘abusing’ the demonstrators who were demanding justice for late Fr Bismarque Dias.
Condemning the action of Goa Police against the demonstrators who were demanding justice for late Fr Bismarque, NCP Goa Unit president Jose Philip D’Souza demanded the probe through the Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC).
“It is a grave mistake of the government and the police to behave in such a manner with the people of Goa who were protesting to demand justice. GHRC should take sou moto cognizance of the incident where elderly and women have been thrashed and abused by the police,” D’Souza demanded.
“The act of police who were acting on behest on the government were trying to put fear in the minds of the protesters and targeting elderly and women so that they should not come out to protest or demonstrate against government,” said Trajano D’Mello, Vice President of NCP Goa Unit.
D’Mello said that the violence was not created by the protesters but by the police themselves.
D’Mello demanded an apology from Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar who is also a Home Minister for the grave injustice towards the innocent people who were demonstrating peacefully.
Over 300 people who walked through the streets demanding justice were been forcefully pushed into the police vans and taken to Porvorim and Anjuna police stations on November 21. During the course of detaining the demonstrators, police do not show any mercy while detaining them, which led to the chaos in Panjim, he added.
