The Valpoi Municipal Council’s special “Gota Ghar” project is expected to cost around Rs 1.50 cr and will funded by the State Animal Husbandry Department.
The municipality will be the first civic body to undertake such project.
As part of the project, stray cattle will be accommodated in a shed with the required infrastructure and veterinary services.
The project is aimed at providing employment as ten posts will be created and locals will be given priority as per decision taken at the recent council meeting.
VMC chairperson Ramdas Shirodkar said, “Stray cattle are a very serious problem not only in Valpoi but in Sattari taluka. These stray cattle squat along many roads in Valpoi and are responsible for many accidents especially at night. The Valpoi Municipal Council has taken this issue very seriously and has decided to go ahead with the special project.”
It may be recalled that the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court had directed all panchayats and municipalities to have their own cowshed so that stray cattle can be accommodated.
But most panchayats and municipalities failed to follow the High Court directive as most sarpanchas from the taluka cited lack of sufficient funds and land as the two main reasons.
