VASCO: The arrest of a Mangor Hill resident for growing ganja in a land close to naval property at Vasco has raised several eyebrows.
The locals from Gandhi Nagar have alleged that the plantation and illicit trade may have been happening under the watch of the naval security. However, the police said that they have asked for the information of the owner of the said property.
The people from Mangor Hill have questioned on how ganja was being planted on a land so close to the Navy land and went unnoticed for so long.
Adv Andre Pereira, who has a property near the same spot, said, “We are not allowed to venture to our property in Bimbvel by the Navy claiming that it is close to the secure location of naval base. I wonder how this ganja plantation was going on when honest citizens are not allowed to go to their own properties close to the navy land.”
He further alleged that the naval officers may have purposely seen the other side while the plantation bloomed in close vicinity of Navy land. “Not even an animal is allowed to venture into these lands close to the Naval land. The Navy has to be questioned in this matter as it looks like they are in setting with these perpetrators from Mangor hill,” Andre added.
Locals have also demanded that a combing operation be conducted in the Mangor Hill area to check for such criminal activities.
Vasco Police Inspector Nolasco Raposo said that he is investigating the matter.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Sunita Sawant informed, “We have sought information on the property details of the land used for ganja cultivation. The land may not be in Naval base limits and their lands are guarded. However, we will be able to take concrete action only after we know whose land it is.”
Meanwhile, none of the Navy officers were available for comments on this matter till Saturday evening.
