Drinking, littering at Salei creek proves costly to youngsters

PANJIM: Drinking at a public place and littering cost some youngsters dearly as Porvorim police on complaints of residents acted swiftly and caught the youth red-handed near Salvador-do-Mundo creek.
This is the same place or creek where the panchayat had put up the “no kissing” board, which had created a stir as national media picked up the story forcing the panchayat to remove the board.
Locals say that every night youngsters with bikes and cars arrive and drink at the place. “They break the bottles and litter the place. Our senior citizens use the area for evening walking, girls also come along the road,” sarpanch Sandeep Salgaocar said.
PI Paresk Naik, after complaints from locals, acted on Saturday evening, and the police caught a few youngsters drinking and littering. Though the boys were not arrested they were warned and asked to clean the area. “I did not want to detain them as they were youngsters and asked them to clean the entire area. The locals are always complaining about this menace,” Naik told Herald.
He said after complaints patrolling has been enhanced. “We have put a dedicated staff for round the clock patrolling in the area,” he said.
Locals said the youngsters were asked to clean the entire area as a punishment. “There has to be some action otherwise it is becoming difficult for families to pass through the roads,” locals said.
