PORVORIM: The PWD has prepared estimates for the proposed subway from Jivottam Mutt to District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) in Porvorim and now awaits clearance from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
This was stated by Tourism Minister and Saligao MLA Dilip Parulekar during a function to launch various works in Nova Cidade at Porvorim, at a combined cost of Rs 32 lakh. The works include construction of gutters, installation of streetlight fixtures, painting of road dividers and a compound for the playground.
“The PWD at Mapusa has prepared estimates for the construction of a subway from Jivottam Mutt to District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), which will provide shorter and safer access to residents of PDA colony and Nova Cidade while proceeding to and from Panjim,” said Parulekar.
“Traffic along the highway from Panjim to Mapusa has risen sharply and accidents have become a regular feature near Jivottam Mutt. Vehicles from PDA colony and Nova Cidade have to travel all the way to the O’Coqueiro Circle and turn back to proceed to Panjim.”
He recalled that some residents of PDA had requested him to construct a subway near Jivottam Mutt to enable light vehicles and pedestrians to cross over to the other side of the highway, proceeding to Panjim, without having to travel all the way to the O’Coqueiro Circle.
“This subway, which will also reduce traffic congestion at the O’Coqueiro Circle, now awaits clearance from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MRTH), since the subway will be constructed across the NH17 highway. We have sought the assistance from Defence Minister Manohar Parriker to expedite the MRTH clearance, so that work can be started soon,” he added.
Stating that the development could be promoted in villages provided local elected representatives are united and work hard for the welfare of their constituents, Parulekar had a word of praise for local Panch Karan Govenkar, for actively pursuing and following up on various works in his ward.
