MAPUSA: HC Arambol Sports Club edged past Candolim Sports Club 3-1 via tie-breaker to get their hands on 15th Arpora Sporting Soccer Cup organized by Arpora Sporting Club at Salt Lake ground, Arpora, Saturday. The teams were locked goalless at full time.
Candolim created better chances but Paul Cardoz misfired on two separate occasions while Jolief Simoes and Terance D’Mello’s were unlucky to see their efforts hit the crossbar.
Arambol did create chances but Hemant Rodrigues and substitute Trushal Naik failed to get past the Candolim keeper Xavier Extrocio in a one-to-one situations.
In the penalty shoot-out, Amit Fernandes, Antonio Rodrigues and Vithal Kinalekar scored for Arambol, while only Terance was on target for Candolim. Arambol were richer by Rs 35,000 alongwith the winners trophy while Candolim had to be content with Rs 25,000 and the runners-up trophy.
Individual prizes were awarded to: Best goalkeeper Neves Fernandes (Arambol), best defender David D’Souza (Candolim), best midfielder Jason Fernandes (Arambol), best forward Paul Cardoz (Candolim), man-of-the-match Amit Fernandes (Arambol), best team UC Nerul and upcoming player of Arpora Paresh Vaigankar.
Chief guest MLA Michael Lobo gave away the prizes in the presence of guest of honour, Anthony Menezes, ex-ZP member of Calangute, Sushma Nagvekar, sarpanch of Arpora-Nagoa, special invitees Cleophas Fernandes, deputy sarpanch Clifford Chukuwuma, technical director of Sesa Football Academy Uday Lingudkar, GFA executive member Samir Naik, former India International and other dignitaries.
Salim Sayed, president of Arpora Sporting Club, Babli Mandrekar, secretary; Sanjay Diukar, treasurer introduced the dignitaries to the players and match officials.
Sanjay compered while Babli proposed the vote of thanks.
