DABOLIM: Speed breakers are designed to reduce road mishaps but a set of speed breakers at Arrosim have, instead, ended up contributing to accidents in the area.
A number of residents have complained that unmarked speed breakers along the Velsao-Colva route at Arrosim have led to many accidents, as motorists, especially two-wheeler riders, have been caught off guard.
“The speed breakers should have been fixed on the connecting roads, instead of the main road, which have been causing havoc to motorists,” remarked a taxi operator, S Fernandes.
“Authorities have done a good job fixing the speed breakers in certain areas which were accident-prone, but in their enthusiasm to install these, safe areas have now turned into accident-prone zones,” he added.
“There are around 28 speed breakers on the road between Colva church and Velsao. Do we really need so many speed breakers along this road,” asked Fernandes.
While the speed breakers have been laid, many of them are still unmarked and this has led to accidents. A resident recalled a recent road mishap involving a man and his daughter while they were travelling on their two-wheeler to Carmel College at Nuvem. “They failed to notice an unmarked speed breaker and as a result they fell off the bike and sustained injuries,” informed the resident.
When the matter was reported to the PWD, the workers came and hastily marked the roads with temporary lime powder on Thursday morning.
When contacted, PWD Asst Engineer Ibraham admitted that some speed breakers along the route were yet to be marked as workers could not complete the marking process. “The speed breakers will be marked permanently in a short while,” he said.
