MARGAO: Residents of Margao and other areas have sounded the alarm over the deteriorating conditions of the nullah (storm water drain) opposite the Margao District Court building, as well as the dilapidated state of pavements around the Old Market circle in the heart of the town.
Creating awareness about these issues, the Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN) has highlighted how mud and stones have accumulated on the verge of the nullah across from the court, risking the debris eventually spilling into the drain itself.

“Will this result then in another tender to clear the nullah?” questioned GOACAN’s Convenor Roland Martins, pointing to the potential wastage of public funds that could be required to dredge the clogged drain.
The citizens’ group also drew attention to the pavement surrounding the Old Market circle near the court premises, which has become overrun with vegetation.
“See how the pavement has been taken over by the creeper, leaving no space for the pedestrian,” he added.
Both areas are located along busy roads witnessing heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic throughout the day in Margao, the commercial hub of South Goa district.
GOACAN warned that ignoring the nullah’s upkeep could prove costly for taxpayers, as highlighted by their message: “Once all this mud goes into the nullah, to remove it will cost the taxpayer,” Martins warned.
The locals also criticised the concerned government authorities for neglecting the prominent areas, despite these being vital commercial zones.
