PANJIM: In a major decision in the interest of farmers, the State Cabinet on Wednesday approved proposal to provide 90 per cent funding towards construction or repair of bunds, as against earlier policy of 50 percent.
Informing about the decision, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said the Cabinet has approved Ordinance to amend the Goa, Daman and Diu Agriculture Tenancy Act 1964 as per which, on government order, funding upto 90 per cent will be provided for construction of bunds.

The balance will have to be taken care by the tenants’ association.
“Currently, government and tenants’ association share 50:50 construction cost. The amendment is done in the interest of farmers,” he said.
The Chief Minister pointed out that there are several bunds which are broken and need repair or reconstruction.
Due to financial crunch, the tenants’ associations were not repairing the bunds as a result several fields were getting destroyed.
In yet another decision, the Cabinet approved the appointment of Justice Nutan Sardessai as Chairperson of the State Police Complaint Authority (SPCA), which was non-functional for last over two-three years. The tenure of the last chairman of the body Justice R M S Khandeparkar ended on April 15, 2018.
Further, the Cabinet also approved enrollment of 270 workers on daily wages into Public Works Department’s Labour Supply Society.
