CALANGUTE: The North Goa Rent-a-Cab Taxi Association (NGRCA) held a rally to protest rent-a-car permits given to the Lamani community, on Thursday.
The rally started from pizza hut next to St Anthony Chapel and ended at Calangute Tinto.
The Vice-President of North Goa Rent-a-Cab Taxi Association, Nitesh Chodankar, said that they held the rally to protest the rent-a-cab licence given to an outsider Surya Rathod from Candolim.
“We have been fighting for five years for the rent-a-cab licence and all the trouble has been taken by us. These outsiders coming to Goa should carry out their business and go back to their respective States. There are political leaders who are supporting them and giving them character certificates. First of all, the Goa government is not doing anything for the youth from the State. Most of them have gone abroad because no employment. Whoever stayed behind is being harassed and hence the youth participated in the protest to criticise the injustice being done to us,” he said.
“These people come from Karantaka; their background needs to be checked. I can prove that some of the outsiders who have been given licence, have extortion and murder cases against them. If people like this enter this business, they area spoiling the name of Goa,” Nitesh added.
North Goa Rent-a-Cab Taxi Association spokesperson Amir Shirodkar claimed that the current situation in the State is bad and Goans have to come out on the road time and again for their right.
“The BJP government has finished us Goans and we have to come on the road for anything we need. We have gone to court to get this rent-a-cab licence. This is a peaceful morcha and the next one will not be like this. I would like to tell the Goa government that we do not need them as they have not done anything for us we have fought for our rights and will continue to do so,” Shirodkar said.
