MARGAO: Migrants have made their presence felt in the commercial capital next to the footpath leading to the KTC bus stand, but the district authorities, Margao police and the local civic body preferred to turn a blind eye.
That’s not all. A group of migrants were also spotted in a shop at Maddel, raising eyebrows over the silence of the Margao Municipality to initiate action against the migrants’ presence in the shop, more so when Madel was rocked by burglaries a week ago.
That the huts near the KTC bus stand have mushroomed right along the road had failed to spur the authorities to crack a whip against the nuisance. Local activist Vitorino Tavares said the illegal huts had surfaced some days ago, but the authorities are not perturbed.
He said the authorities had in the past initiated action against the hutments based on complaints from local NGOs and wondered why the police or Margao civic body cannot take suo moto action against the illegal hutments. “The huts are posing nuisance to the people passing by the footpath and the road. The local ward councillor and MLA should see the nuisance created by the migrants. Will they make their presence felt only after crimes are reported in the area?” Tavares questioned, while pointing out to the spate of burglaries that took place at Madel
last week.
