PONDA: The Betki-Candola village panchayat has decided to go vegetarian on January 22 to celebrate the inauguration of the Ram Mandir at Ayodhya Dham.
While the State government has not imposed any ban, the panchayat issued a public notice urging liquor shops, butchers selling meat, fish vendors and bars and restaurants serving non-vegetarian food, to keep their shutters down for the grand celebration happening nearly 2,000 kilometres away, in Uttar Pradesh.

A notice signed by the Sarpanch states that the celebration of the Ram Mandir on January 22, is significant for the village. As a result, all wine shops, bars, fish vendors, chicken centres, mutton shops, Chinese eateries, and fast food outlets within the jurisdiction of Betki-Candola panchayat are required to remain closed on that day.
The notice appeals to business owners to actively participate in the Ram Mandir celebration and cooperate with the panchayat’s decision. It warns that strict action will be taken against any owner found disobeying the orders. A similar notice was later issued by the Tivrem-Orgao panchayat, also located in Ponda taluka, warning of strict action against violators.
