Concrete patchwork on roads more durable

It has now become an annual occurrence that a few rainy showers at the start of the monsoon season are sufficient for the potholes to appear on the roads. These potholes become bigger and deeper as the monsoon progresses thereby making driving and riding a vehicle a back-breaking and dangerous task.

The authorities concerned then get into action and do patchwork on the roads with a mixture of gravel and tar with the road roller being moved over it.

However, this patchwork does not seem to last even a few days of downpour. The patchwork then breaks up with the gravel strewn all over the place. This can prove risky for two-wheeler riders.

The pot-holes obviously reappear. Instead of carrying out the patchwork with tar and gravel, it would be in the fitness of things to do the patchwork with cement concrete.

It is observed that cement concrete used for patchwork lasts longer, probably even till the end of the monsoon season. It is pertinent to note that during the Portuguese rule most of the roads in Goa were made of cement.
