CANACONA: Monsoon rejuvenates the seasonal Bamonbudo waterfall at Gaondogrem.
The enchanting Bamonbudo waterfall at Gaondogrem is now flowing after Canacona received continuous rains for the last 10 days. Canacona, the southernmost taluka of Goa, has a unique undulating topography and is home to many waterfalls and forms part of the rich biodiversity. Most of these waterfalls are miles away in the woods and accessible only by foot.
The mesmerising Bamonbudo water fall known for its medicinal value gives a massage like feeling if one stands below the fall. It has become a popular spot for people of Canacona and beyond.
This waterfall where the water cascades down over a tilted vertical wall of black stone as the legends say got its name following an accident that happened centuries ago. A person belonging to the Saraswat community slipped from a height and drowned at this waterfall. Since then this nameless waterfall became Bamonbudo waterfall.
This waterfall is about 15 kms from the NH and the internal road through Gaondogrem from Bhatpal reaches you there to the doorstep of the waterfall which is located at Tudal.
The Bamonbudo waterfall was in the news some time back following frequent complaints about picnickers drinking excessively and passing lewd comments against local women who have to pass by this waterfall to go to their farms.
The picnickers earned a bad name for littering the place with plastic and all unwanted garbage at the waterfall. At a meeting with the DIG, Goa police, the local men complained about the threat to local women who belong to the schedule tribe community, who have special protections and privileges as per the Indian Constitution.
The picnickers use obscene language under the influence of alcohol. The local police has promised to make this area no alcohol zone with the help of the panchayat and patrol the area by providing police personnel all through the monsoon season and more so on the weekends.
The area around the waterfall was also cleared of all garbage by the Canacona police with the help of the locals a few days ago.
With the assurance of the police the locals feel the picnickers will behave more responsibly both towards the environment and the locals whilst enjoying the waterfall which is a gift of God to the Gaon-Dongrem, the village on hills.
