MARGAO: Three residents of Gogol Housing Board, Margao, were arrested by Karnataka police for having robbed four four-wheelers from Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
The accused are identified as Shafi Shaikh, Wasim Sayed and Nazir Sayed. They were arrested by the Davangere police after they were found stealing, tampering with identification of the vehicles and selling them to prospective buyers.
A Hyundai Creta bearing number GA-07-L-0745, a Maruti Suzuki Brezza bearing number KA-40-M-7809, a Renault Duster and a Toyota Innova were recovered by the police during the arrest. The accused had stolen a vehicle from Goa, one from Maharashtra and one from Davangere. The police in Davangere traced the stolen vehicle which led them to these three accused persons.
Two of the accused were arrested in Goa and third was picked up from Bangalore by Davangere police.
According to the police, the accused purchased accidental total loss salvage vehicles and stole similar vehicles. They then tampered the engine and chassis number of the vehicle and also interchanged the licence plate numbers. These vehicles were then resold to prospective buyers or used by themselves.
Davangere Superintendent of Police R Chetan (IPS) has congratulated his team for cracking the case and has meanwhile maintained that the possibility of be a bigger racket operating with these accused can’t be ruled out.
One of the vehicles that have been recovered from accused belongs to a Chinchinim resident. The Hyundai Creta of licence plate GA-07-L-0745 (fake number) was stolen from a car wash station from Chinchinim in April 2018.
It is learnt that one of the accomplices of the accused went to the car wash station posing as the driver of the owner of the vehicle and drove away the car.
Cuncolim police said that they would send a PSI to Davangere to follow up the case.
