Citizens said that the third major accident was reported at the site of the rumbler strips recently, killing one person at Dhandevaddo. NelsonLopes, a resident of Chinchinim, complained that there is not even six inches of footpath/sidewalk for pedestrians on the stretch.

He added that the heavy container trucks have no space on the highway, and lamented that local residents’ demand for a cost-effective bypass road to ease traffic congestion are being ignored in favour of a flyover at seven times the cost of a bypass.

OnTuesday, the familiar ‘Chirmulkar’, who is usually on foot, was knocked down by a truck and died on the spot, without any damage to his brand new cycle. Lopes further said that the driver tried to escape but was fortunately apprehended after one kilometre by an old panch, providing the police much needed respite from a hunt for evidence.

“The rumblers have not only exacerbated the noise nuisance but increased manifold the chances of more such accidents. Either the rumblers have to be removed or the traffic police need to implement the measures they have themselves suggested,”he added.

Citizens have expressed anger over the issue and claim that the loud noise of vehicles thumping and rattling over the rumblers are keeping them awake at night. The residents have sought relief from the noise pollution, which they claim is beyond permissible limits.   “The noise is especially unbearable in the nights, as heavy vehicles plydown this road. Senior citizens with heart conditions and hypertension are affected by the noise; it disturbs our normal sleep patterns and aggravate health conditions,” he added.
