Students of Std X failing in two subjects at the Board exam will now be Allowed To Keep Terms (ATKT) and continue their studies in Std XI. The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has decided to implement this decision from this year, a move that will bring cheer to many students who feel they haven’t done well in the 2009-10 Board exam.
The ATKT proposal was moved by Education Minister Babush Monserrate last year. Even though the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education had approved it last year itself the same could not be implemented due to the time factor.
Chairman of Goa Board Merwyn D’Souza said the Board will issue circulars which will be sent to all high schools informing them that the decision will be implemented from this academic year.
D’Souza mentioned as per the ATKT rule the students failing in two subjects at SSC will be able to take admission to Std XI but will have to clear the subjects either in the supplementary examination or the March Board exam. In case if he/she fails to clear the subjects in both the exams his/her Std XI result will be reserved till he/she clears the subjects, he informed.
Monserrate had formulated the ATKT proposal for Std X and XII students and had favoured its implementation from last year itself. The minister’s proposal was based on a similar demand which was under consideration of the Maharashtra Government at the time.
The Education Minister had said the number of students failing in two subjects at the Std X and XII levels was significant and many of them abandoned their studies from thereon.
