PANJIM: The Society of Pilar organised a Theological Consultation at Pilar Theological College on Thursday, October 3.
His Eminence Cardinal Oswald Gracias of Mumbai presided over the Consultation. Most Rev Archbishop Anil Couto of Delhi, Most Rev. Archbishop Thomas Macwan of Gandhinagar, Most Rev. Archbishop Felix Toppo of Ranchi, Most Rev. Bishop Lawrence Pius of Dharampuri and Most Rev Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas sfx of Ranchi were the resource persons. The Episcopal dignitaries were welcomed with traditional symbols from all over India: Budhist beads, Khasi shawls, flower garlands, Punjabi garlands of notes, Nepali and Marathi headgear etc.
Fr. Sebastiao Mascarenhas, the Superior General, delivered the key note address. He elaborated the aim of the consultation as defining a path for the Society of Pilar towards contributing towards a good and compassionate society as per the cryptic statement of the Bible: Jesus went about doing good. He said, “All challenges are opportunities as God gives hope in all”.
Rev Theodore Mascarenhas highlighted the importance of dialogue with the political leaders and shared principles, which would lead to a good and constructively critical contribution for the good of the people.
Rev Lawrence Pius focussed on the youth especially on the various issues arising from the Social Media and its influence on the youth. “Understanding the youth perspective is important in order to guide them,” he added.
Rev Felix Toppo, with his experience of working in the Chota Nagpur belt, highlighted the need to protect the interest of the tribals and their land while developing the rich mineral resources of the State. “Short term gains could destroy human existences,” he said.
Rev Thomas Macwan appreciated the Pilar Fathers for their missionary spirit and simplicity. He added, “We should always immerse in the culture of the place, especially the language of the place.”
Rev Anil Couto spoke on the issues of the poor and the marginalised. He stressed on integral human development. “Entering into cultures and transforming the evil, unjust structures is the challenge before us and requires prophetic courage, he said.
Finally, His Eminence Cardinal Oswald Gracias, appreciated the Society of Pilar for its dynamic service and selfless committment. He spoke about contributing to everything and collaborating with everyone involved in transforming society into a just and equitable society.
