MARGAO: The proposal for a steep hike in construction license fee within the jurisdiction of the Margao Municipal Council has upset many city fathers and there is a possibility them clashing over the issue at the council meeting to be held on August 25. Many councillors said that it was unjust and unfair to burden the common man with additional taxes.
Chairperson of the Margao Municipal Council Damodar Shirodkar however defended the proposed hike in license fees for new constructions by citing the new government circular. Speaking to O Heraldo, several city fathers, however, voiced their objection to the proposed fee hike, stating that it is unjust to implement an increase ranging from 38 to 45 percent.

The disagreement revolves around the fairness and necessity of such a significant fee increase for construction projects.

A group of concerned citizens has taken a stand against the proposed fee hike, claiming that the civic body is increasingly burdening them with taxes.
They voiced their objections to the fee increase, suggesting that the continuous imposition of taxes is becoming overwhelming for the local population.
Their allegations point to a larger concern about the financial management of the municipal council and its impact on the everyday lives of residents.
It is pertinent to note that the civic body has included in its agenda for the ordinary meeting scheduled on August 25, wherein the plinth area rates formulated by the Public Works Department which, once adopted, will soon come into effect.
“Two months back, the civic body had received a circular from the government stating that to implement the order pertaining to hike in the construction licence fees. The issue will be discussed at the next meeting wherein the city fathers will resolve to go ahead with the circular or not,” said the Chairperson.
He further said that if council rejects, the civic body will keep on hold in implementing the orders but those objecting must keep in mind that it is government circular and not of Municipality, said the chairperson. Camilo Barretto, councillor said that it is unfair to increase the construction license fees as it will add more burden on the citizens and those individuals who intend to build their houses.
“There are several other ways and options to generate revenue for the civic body. And hence, they should tap those sources and try to lessen the burden of taxes on the public,” he stated.
