PANJIM: The Panjim Traffic Cell has found itself in a tight spot with a number of ‘unclaimed vehicles,’ largely comprising of two-wheelers occupying parking space right outside the town and traffic police stations. This comes at the time when the Traffic Cell is on a mission to clear 199 abandoned vehicles identified across different parking lots in the city.
“The vehicles parked outside the police station(s) are unclaimed as these were involved in accidents. Out of these, 75 percent are court properties as charge sheets are filed in these cases. Since the court (premises) lacks space, we are directed to produce these vehicles for evidence during the hearing. It is in such a situation that these vehicles are parked here and we cannot interfere,” deputy superintendent of (traffic) police, North Goa, Dharmesh Angle told reporters.
He was responding to a media question that while the Traffic Department is clearing abandoned vehicles to create parking space for other vehicles, the parking lot in front of the Panjim, Traffic, Women police stations is almost full of unclaimed vehicles.
Angle said these vehicles will be shifted to a yard at Bainguinim, which has been allotted by the Corporation of City of Panjim.
In its ongoing drive against traffic violators, the Traffic Cell has recorded 2,353 violations for over speeding in the last 15 days. The offences, reported in different parts of the State, come following installation of portable speed radars, introduced last month.
Meanwhile, in the first three months of the year, the department registered 1,129 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol, 563 for riding/driving while speaking on mobile phones and 129 for jumping red lights.
Angle said licenses of violators have been confiscated and submitted to the Transport Department recommending their temporary suspension.
