Residents of Curchorem on Tuesday confronted Curchorem MLA Shyam Satardekar over the issue of proposed four-lane road from Tilamol to Curchorem.
The residents sought to know from the MLA as to why he was pursuing the four-lane road through the heart of the fifth most-populated municipal council in the State.
Mafaldo Fernandes reminded the MLA of the assurance given by him that he was against road widening and the written assurance he gave at Tilamol Church at the time of panchayat election. Residents claimed that the existing road is sufficient for the next 10 years.
Adv Atrey Kakodkar said: “Our only demand is that the notification for land acquisition must be withdrawn.”
The MLA assured that he was with the people and agreed to attend the meeting organized by the Manch at Curchorem on Saturday to draw its future course of action.
Earlier, the Ganv Rakhon Manch convened a meeting at Curchorem to oppose and make the people aware about the consequences of the 2 lakh sq mtrs land for four-laning Tilamol-Curchorem road.
When most of the speakers addressed the meeting, one Maria suggested that being Tuesday the MLA will be in his office and those present for the meeting agreed to her suggestion and decided to meet the MLA in his office to question him over the issue.
Later, all the villagers in a rally marched to the office of Curchorem MLA Satardekar.
The villagers also brought to the notice of the MLA that non-mining traffic is hardly 30-40 four-wheelers per hour against the capacity of this two-lane road of 150 four-wheelers per hour.
