Bihar native gets police custody in rape case

MARGAO:  The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Margao on Sunday remanded 25-year-old Bihar native Promod Mahato to two days police custody in connection with the alleged rape of a minor student from a village in Salcete.

Cuncolim police said the minor student was sexually harassed and allegedly raped by the youth. Police registered a case of rape against the accused under Sections 376 and 354 of the IPC for rape and sexual harassment and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, (POCSO Act) and under Section 8 of the Goa Children’s Act. 

The victim girl and the accused were sent for medical examination at Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim on Saturday.  Detailed report is awaited. 

It may recalled that the mother of the victim lodged a complaint on Friday alleging that her minor daughter was raped by the accused, who is her neighbour.
